AMD has identified a thermal issue in some Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards, which may lead to high temperatures reaching up to 110 degrees Celsius and potentially cause throttled performance. If you are experiencing this issue, AMD advises you to contact its customer support for further assistance.
AMD has confirmed that some models of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card are experiencing cooling issues that can lead to throttled performance. In a statement sent to various press outlets, including ComputerBase, AMD addressed the issue which has been reported by users experiencing unusually high temperatures of up to 110 degrees Celsius on the graphics card. The company has encouraged those affected to contact its customer support for further assistance.
AMD is actively working to determine the cause of unexpected throttling in some of its AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards. Based on the company’s investigations so far, it believes that the issue is related to the thermal solution used in the AMD reference design and affects a limited number of the cards sold. AMD is committed to finding a solution for impacted cards and encourages customers experiencing this issue to contact its support for assistance. The company’s statement reads: “We are working to determine the root cause of the unexpected throttling experienced by some while using the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards made by AMD. Customers experiencing this unexpected throttling should contact AMD Support”.
The issue affects the AMD-manufactured Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which is being sold directly to consumers on the company’s website. The graphics card features a water-powered vapor chamber to absorb and dissipate the heat from the GPU. However, AMD’s statement suggests something is wrong with the component, leading to overheating, which can trigger the graphics card to throttle down the performance.
According to hardware reviewer Igor’s Lab, the vapor chamber in the affected AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards can reach temperatures as high as 110 degrees Celsius, which is above the permissible range. Igor’s Lab cites industry sources as claiming that as many as four to six batches of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, potentially involving thousands of units, may be affected by this issue.
AMD has not yet responded to a request for comment on this issue. However, the company’s statement suggests that a recall of the affected graphics cards may be imminent. It is worth noting that in its own testing, the review unit of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX did not experience the overheating issue and maintained an average temperature of 58 degrees Celsius.
